Veneer/Crown: Darkened Teeth and Old Crowns That Don’t Look Good Anymore

BEFORE
AFTER

This situation had slowly sneaked up on our patient seen here. She had nocked her two front teeth at a young age, and had to have root canal treatment at the time. She had subsequently had two crowns placed. Over time, as decades go by, the teeth have become more and more discoloured, and was now showing through the pink gums!

What may seem like a small issue – but until we’d came to a deeper understanding of how the patient was feeling, that we’d discovered that she had been avoiding smiling with her teeth for a number of years, and now that her wedding is coming up, she’d really wanted to improve the discolouration in the teeth and gums, and that the crowns should look more natural than they were.

After a comprehensive discussion, and all options considered, we’d taken the conservative approach. We’d started with simple whitening of the teeth from the inside (internal bleaching), which had worked wonders on getting rid of the darkened areas, then followed by two new custom-designed and colour-matched porcelain crowns to mimic mother nature. Just look at the photos, you can hardly tell!

We’d since received feedback from the patient – she’d never smiled wider than she did on her wedding day and for her wedding photos, and she is still amazed that no one as yet could tell that her front teeth were porcelain crowns. Talking about this case really brings joy to the team at Thornbury Family Dental!
